What is an abandoned vehicle and how do I report it?

State law considers vehicles abandoned if they meet one of the following criteria:

  1. The vehicle is obviously inoperable, over five years old and left unattended on public property for over 48 hours
  2. The vehicle is left unattended in the right-of-way of a designated state or federal highway (US 75, SH 121)

Vehicles with expired registrations are not automatically considered abandoned under state law. However, they may be deemed junk vehicles and subject to code enforcement action.
